Why ChatGPT names the home down the road and not yours

On 31 October 2026 an AI assistant was asked, with no account signed in, to recommend a residential care home for someone's mum in 18 Essex areas. It named a home in five. In the other 13 it said, in effect, "I can't name one I'd stand behind". It is almost never because the other home is better. It is because the other home is easier for a machine to describe.

What it read

Every time it named a home, it had read one of two things: a CQC rating page, or a directory review score. In Leigh-on-Sea it named a national-group home rated Outstanding and listed three independents it had found rated Good. In Wickford it named a home purely on a 9.9 directory score.

What it didn't read

Not one of the 18 answers mentioned a home's own website. Not for fees, not for visiting, not for what the home is good at. The sites exist; the assistant didn't use them.

The six reasons, in order of how often they're the cause

The record disagrees with itself. A phone number on the website that isn't the one on the CQC record. A manager named on the contact page who isn't the registered manager. A postcode off by a letter. Seven of 20 Essex homes checked had something like this.

The site blocks the assistant. Three of the 20 had a setting on the site telling ChatGPT and Gemini to stay out, one while paying for a featured directory slot.

No page answers the question. "How much does residential care cost near Rochford?" has a number for an answer. Most sites answer it with "contact us".

The CQC page is old. Several homes carry Good ratings from 2019 to 2021. The assistant leans on this year's.

The directory score is thin. Two reviews, or none, where the home up the road has 90.

The site is a shell. A template, a parked domain, a server error. Three of the 20.

What to do this week

Open your CQC page, your carehome.co.uk page, your Google Business Profile and your own contact page side by side. Make the phone number, the registered manager's name, the postcode and the bed count identical. That's step two of the four, and it's the one that moves things first.
